VI. THE GUARDIAN OF SANTIAGO (Preguntas 36 a 45)
Cerro Manquehue is the most prominent natural landmark towering over the eastern side of Santiago, Chile. Standing at 1,638 meters above sea level, this ancient, extinct volcano is millions of years old. Its name originates from the indigenous Mapudungun language, meaning “Place of Condors,” a tribute to the massive Andean birds that can still occasionally be seen soaring near its rocky summit.
For the inhabitants of Santiago, Manquehue is much more than just a mountain; it is a natural sanctuary right on the edge of a bustling metropolis. Every weekend, hundreds of locals and tourists flock to its trails to escape the city’s noise, smog, and fast-paced routine. The hike offers a quick connection with nature, allowing people to exercise while enjoying the fresh mountain air.
However, conquering the peak is no easy feat. The trail is known for its steep incline and challenging terrain, which consists of loose dirt, slippery gravel, and large boulders. The vegetation along the way belongs to the Chilean matorral ecosystem, featuring hardy, evergreen shrubs and cacti that have adapted perfectly to the region’s dry, Mediterranean climate. As hikers climb higher, the urban sounds completely fade away, replaced by the whispering wind.
The true reward awaits at the flat summit. From the top, hikers enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the entire Santiago basin. On a clear day, especially after it rains, the contrast between the modern city skyscrapers and the colossal, snow-capped Andes Mountains is absolutely spectacular. It is a powerful reminder of the unique geography that defines the Chilean identity.
