Comprehension: Saint Alberto Hurtado

Father Alberto Hurtado was a Chilean Jesuit priest, lawyer, and social worker. He was born in Viña del Mar in 1901. After his father died, his family became very poor, but Alberto worked hard to study law at the Catholic University. Later, he decided to become a priest and traveled to Europe to study theology.

When he returned to Chile, he saw many children and adults living in extreme poverty on the streets of Santiago. Deeply moved by this reality, he founded the Hogar de Cristo in 1944. This institution provided shelter, food, and education to homeless people. Father Hurtado drove a famous green pickup truck around the city to rescue children at night.

He wrote books about social justice and labor rights, and always promoted solidarity. He died of cancer in 1952 and was canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. Today, his legacy lives on as an inspiration for social change in Chile.
